Talk
You’ve probably noticed you do not work in a Mad Men era, the distinctions between you and those elsewhere on the org chart enough to tell everyone how to behave. However retrograde, things were clear.
Now everyone thinks, rightfully, that their position and their career journey matter.
But that means everyone needs to be seen and heard.
Show up. Go to the lunch. Get out of your office and operate free off the screen.
Yes, this is time-consuming and a lot to add to all you have to do. But now you are not just the boss, you are mommy and daddy, the parent who needs to make it to the game to watch their kid play.
And yes, you might also resent this validating work. But the more you talk to those in your charge with an ear of interest and an eye of validation the fewer landmines will end up going off on your desk.
Look after yourself this weekend,
Ted
